We’re Celebrating our 10th Anniversary by Expanding
This January 2019, The École took over the lease of the restaurant that occupied the ground floor and basement of our main building (and original location) at 111 East 22nd Street. Construction by architect Barbara Marks on the new space will start in the coming weeks. It will include the addition of six new classrooms, several multi-use rooms in the basement, a large préau (covered recess area) and a welcoming lobby. The new lobby space will be a meeting place for families, reinforcing our strong sense of community. During the construction, the main building will remain open, as the new space will be separate until the end of construction, which should be completed by the end of 2019.
We are looking long term, focusing on making the school better
“We were looking for a bigger space for The École, to make sure we can offer the best to our students, families, teachers and staff,” said Philippe and Laurence Roux, The École Benefactors. “The expansion of our main building is an amazing opportunity, allowing us to grow without moving and to stay in the vibrant Flatiron District, close to our other building at 206 Fifth Avenue. We are looking long term, focusing on making the school better: maintaining and enhancing our unique dual program, nurturing our community and always caring!”
The École has been steadily growing since our founding in 2009, with the addition of another building in the neighborhood in 2014. That building, 206 Fifth Avenue, currently houses the Maternelle (Nursery, Pre-K, Kindergarten) and two 1st Grade classes. Now, during the decennial school year of The École, this new expansion will allow us to double the square footage of our main building, offering a better experience for students, teachers, staff and parents. Although The École is growing, we are committed to remaining a small, community-minded school, with no more than two classes per grade and a maximum of 20 students per class.
